Hiking through the Bavarian Wildalm in Austria

Hello Friends,

Here is another chapter in my cross-country road trip saga. On this particular day, we wandered into an incredible forest for a hike and we were treated to many beautiful sights.

The Bavarian Wildalm covers land in both Germany and Austria, however, contrary to what the name implies, it is largely located in Austria. We explored part of this Wildalm in Austria, close to the German border. This area is protected by Ramsar Convention as it is considered to be a wetland area of international importance.

A very memorable experience…

This was quite a momentous occasion for me as I had never seen a place like this in my life ever before. So, I took lots of photos and savoured the beauty. One of my favourite things about this hike is how safe I felt. That might sound like a strange statement but it was nice not to have to be overly cautious with where I stepped in case I came across a snake (snakes love sunny days in Victoria).

It gets hot even in early Spring

Now, I finally understand how people in these Alpine areas walk and run in minimal clothing. Despite the cool temperatures the sun can actually be quite strong, I required sunscreen and I got very hot wearing jeans and a jumper.

I hope you enjoyed this blog post. I had a wonderful time exploring this part of Austria and I would recommend that all nature lovers find the opportunity to get lost in the Alps.

  1. Fantastic photos. It is a truly beautiful place to behold. Maybe one day I’ll be able to stand where you have. For now, I’ll focus on the hikes I can enjoy here in Western Wisconsin and Eastern Minnesota. I’ll be waiting patiently for your next post.
